Where Fiber, Yarn and the Day-to-Day Tangle

I Just Need A Little Space

I've previously mentioned my three cats in passing but in case you were picturing dainty, delightful and independent members of the feline species, I should set you straight.

It was a fine mix of irrefutable logic: "I'll buy all their stuff myself" and emotional manipulation: "They need extra love and we're really good at love in our house" that got Blink, Wink and Albus past the threshold.  Despite the stereotypes regarding my gender AND regarding my chosen hobby, I'm not really a cat person.  I'm a dog person who gave birth to a cat person...but my kid is excellent at getting his way using underhanded and devious methods. I've taught him well; I'm so proud.

These cats are not shy, retiring, independent felines.  Not one of them has an ounce of dignity. They're verbose and loud; they talk to me, they talk to each other. They threaten the dogs, they box each other, they open drawers they're not supposed to and have zero regard for personal space. Closed doors are an affront to them; if you haven't double-checked it's been properly and firmly latched, that door is coming open.  I think one of them is hiding an opposable thumb.

Originally, I kept my yarn in my guest bedroom (we'll talk about the stash another time). My roving lived in covered baskets in my bedroom and the rest of my supplies were kept in various cabinets throughout the house. I've given up the battle keeping any space in my house cat-free. I've waived the white flag. I do however, require just a tiny corner of my home where I can sew and bead and crochet and spin.  A summit was called this weekend.

The cats and I met and knocked out an agreement.  They've allowed me the use of the library in the evenings as long as I keep all the windows available to them. Wink just wouldn't agree to stay off flat surfaces, but has conceded that he will only jump on my sewing table when I'm not sitting at it. Blink agreed to refrain from dragging my tools out in front of me; he's willing to wait till I leave the room. He has also agreed not to unravel balls of yarn or to tangle any unwound skeins as long as I don't allow any ends to dangle. Albus reserved the right to stare at me for unspecified quantities of time in the most eerie fashion possible.

At least I have a table and all my stuff is in one room now.
